oh, life isn't fate it's just what you make it nothing's for free if you can't learn to take it. you're working late and I'm out drinking but don't worry, babe I know what you're thinking. you think I'd give you up for anyone under the sun or run away at night with out telling anyone but when I come home I'm going to lay right next to you. oh, girl when I come home. oh, life isn't fate it's just what you make it. promises break and my heart just can't take it. when friends walk away I'm stranded, thinking missing what's not there, I don't think I can make it. you think I'd give you up for anyone under the sun or run away at night with out telling anyone but when I come home I'm going to lay right next to you oh, girl when I come home.

there's never enough time to do what I want to do but I heard it's a sin to whine so I guess I'm bound to leave you "I want to run away" is all she'd ever say cause you had her feeling so alone and afraid oh, you used to believe in her now, you are just leaving her. and, I just can't fall asleep when you are not here. she's letting go. and running away to the edge of the land where sex sells again I guess this is a sign that the world has lost it's mind. and if you think you're wrong you're probably right.

Strong Man 02:46
I see you, and can tell what's going on inside your head. I know there is a strong man in there whoa, so c'mon man don't let them push you around. you see her, as better but don't you know you've just been lying to yourself. I know it's hard to believe that you're equal but listen, boy, your cups more than half full you don't have to believe me for it to be true no one is better than you. your happiness is long overdue your happiness belongs to you.
4.
Temperance 02:42
temperance, the sun, the moon and the stars oh, the devil's in a tower reach up to God for forgiveness "Why can't you practice what you preach?" the world is under judgement we're all hanged, man it's death by God's hand. it takes strength to fight against the current so I'm floating now, on my way down south to hell. the empress giving birth to her baby, but her lover was absent he was a magician, who made himself dissappear to make the crowd go crazy, but left his wife with their baby. we're all under judgement we're all hanged men it's death by God's hand. it takes strength to fight against the current so I'm floating now, on my way down south to hell. I wish we all could live as fools, but were made to believe life's an emergency. so, hurry up, on your way down south to hell.

More 02:23
let's stop, and make sense of this cause I don't remember how I exist but when the sun came up, I was drunk and on the floor it wasn't enough, I still wanted more. more understanding more time, because mine's running out. though I will never know, where I'm from still, I am scared to death of where I'm going. so I'll pray, to a God I don't know and I'll hope he hears me, but I know he won't because this world's fucked up yeah, I hope you hear me, but I know you don't understand me you should be paying Mother Earth child support because you left all of us, and didn't care you said that you are love, but you are not there. more, more understanding more time, because mine's running out though I will never know, where I'm from still, I am scared to death of where I'm going.

after yesterday I'm sure I wish I never ever got too close to you in that dark room we took off our clothes, and I made love to you. now I can't even look her in the eyes after last night, because what I did just wasn't right. I'm sorry, but people don't change. people can't change. the sun came up like yesterday and everyone on earth stayed the same cause people can't change deep down at their cores there are tendencies that they can't control, or let go off our insides remain "sorry" proves people never change. oh, I'm sorry, but people don't change. I am the same I've always been what makes you think I could change? people can't change. the sun came up like yesterday and everyone on earth stayed the same. I'm sorry, but people can't change.

Better Way 03:14
he was born his parents unsure of how they'd care for him all he wanted was love, but these days everything has a price, baby. there's got to be a better way please tell me there's a better way. his dad loved him with all that he had but it wasn't enough he turn and ran for the western coast leaving his son behind and alone there's got to be a better way please tell me there's a better way. now, just 6 years old with a father he's never known "mommy's always at work, and never home and I have these questions with answers I'll never know" there's got to be a better way please just tell me there's a better way how much am I worth? if my father unearthed and walked away on that day. I know you were poor and probably unsure but if you stuck around this town I'm sure we could've worked things out. right now, I'm growing up and getting old living life with regret because of the options I never chose and the ones I'll never get to know. there's got to be a better way please just tell me there's a better way.
8.
you think you know what's going on but there's no way you can see at all you're blind, but trying to see but I'm your only option, so take it from me. you are loved. you think your thoughts are the truth when I say you're beautiful, and your brain says there's missing proof well, open your eyes, and see my true love but no matter how much I give, it's never enough. you are loved.
9.
how can I sum up regret? I feel like I have got nothing left and you're the only thing that makes sense to me every morning I wake, I just feel sorry. how can I apologize with you looking me in the eyes? well, I've said sorry so many times that it's meaningless and every time I open my mouth, I just regress. why are you so mad? can't you see I'm already let down by myself there's no need to remind me. but you're still frowning making sure I get the punishment I deserve, but baby, I'm sorry.

he's sells ideas to them targeting people who target him to let live their dreams he sells what they need and then he makes them wait four more years. I bought into the scam of the man, but now, I want my money back. after his victims realized they wish they never believed his words when he said "you're going to be a star" but he sold what they needed that day and then he made them wait four more years. and now, we're all singing: I wished I never dreamed of being something great because dreaming of being something great means your soul's going to have to break unless, you're one of the lucky few whose dreams didn't forsake you. can I be one of the lucky few? if I could, I'd take care of me and you.

about

While I was unemployed for a short time in the Summer of 2010, I took some time to notice the lives of those surrounding me. I saw people struggling with regret, abandonment and poor self-worth. With empathy, I wrote in first and third person to encourage and relate to these different people.

Between job hunting sessions, I wrote and recorded these songs using anything within reach (pots, pans, counter tops, coolers, korg mini pops) to bring them to life. I also remember falling in love with many of Daniel Johnston's songs and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" by Bob Dylan during the making of this album.

To date, this is my favorite group of consecutively written songs, and I'm very excited to finally release them.

about

Ben Hughes New Jersey

"...channels musicians like Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, and Sufjan Stevens, as on Hughes’ previous releases. But this record immediately calls to mind Pedro the Lion’s Control, with its deep-voiced chords and melodies, lyrical themes of corporate hell, and Hughes’ slurring voice. It could stand as a complimentary album to Control just as well as it stands on its own."
