lyrics

I lit the fuse but it never took off
I flipped the switch, but the lights never came on
you were scared I'd see the real you, so you took off
but I said I'd be your friend no matter what you're on.

so, we drove down 540, and saw a nativity being thrown out
those wise men couldn't afford the mess they found themselves in
the man burned down their stable to stay warm once the truth was found out
and left them with a few trash stickers, and no home to live in.

I lit the fuse but it never took off
I flipped the switch, but the lights never came on
you were scared I'd see the real you, so you took off
but I said I'd be your friend no matter what you're on.

so, you hung your head and thought of how you needed a break from the way things are here
I wonder if it just seems like it, or if it actually is better over there
dreaming of how you want things to be won't get you out of here
you're going to have to move those legs to get over there.

I lit the fuse but it never took off
I flipped the switch, but the lights never came on
you were scared I'd see the real you, so you took off
but I said I'd be your friend no matter what you're on.

about

Ben Hughes New Jersey

"...channels musicians like Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, and Sufjan Stevens, as on Hughes’ previous releases. But this record immediately calls to mind Pedro the Lion’s Control, with its deep-voiced chords and melodies, lyrical themes of corporate hell, and Hughes’ slurring voice. It could stand as a complimentary album to Control just as well as it stands on its own."
